These red one-room schoolhouses were ubiquitous in the US in the 19th and into the early part of the 20th century. Situated in small developments or towns all the children ages 6-14 learned together with one teacher who divided the time up between various age groups. Not an ideal learning situation but it got the job done. This schoolhouse was moved from a small town in central Illinois to the historic site in Deerfield IL.
