I spotted this area at the end of June on my way to our 40th wedding anniversary dinner. It's an area of wetlands I've photographed before - that evening would have been a great shot but for the rain and no camera. At that time the baby herons were in all these nests you see and adults herons were flying in and feeding them. The nests are about 4 feet across and herons always build them in swampy areas with dead trees. Alas when I finally got back there it was daytime and young and adult herons were out fishing no doubt. There were a dozen nests and it's my understanding they will come back to the same nests every year until the tree falls apart. Next year I hope to get birds in the nests. It's a difficult area in which to get a shot as the closest I can get is to stand at the edge of a busy state highway that runs next to the swamp - the winds from the semi trucks whizzing by behind me almost knocked me over.
