The Kohala resorts lie along the the northwest coastline of the big island, and this small area of the island is shielded from rain by the major volcanos surrounding the area. Whereas the rainiest parts of the island can get nearly 300 inches of rain per year, this part of the island gets 10 inches, as it is shielded from the northeast trade winds. This is why it has the best, and most reliable, beaches on the island any time of the year. This was taken from the Hapuna Prince Hotel, looking south towards the wetter Kona, and the dormant (for only 200 years) Hualalai sloping upwards on the left.
