That's a different issue from linebreaks in comments because the signatures are no supposed to be long. By limiting the number of characters and preventing the use of linebreaks we limit the amount of verticle space that the signatures take up. By allowing linebreaks we would be allowing people to create really long signatures that take up too much space.
