this is a question which many of you will laugh at. i have a 5d and use a 35 to 105 lens. i get wonderful shots but definitely lots of distortion on the outsides. is there anything i can do to lessen this. OR does anyone have any tips of how to undistort without making the picture huge and cropping. i thought of using an abnormally wide frame like17x9 and then bending. no matter what i am rarely happy with my results. any help would be greatly appreciated.
Make and model of the lens? ... I am assuming that the usual anomalies from the way a zoom lens has to reassemble an image thru all focal lengths .. is your culprit .. do you get this distortion on your 'prime' lens? (single focal length) ..
PTlens is software to correct barrel distortion and pincushion .. two problems of lens optics that come into play on architecture photography and such
but .. I don't know if that is the problem you speak of .. so I am not recommending an outlay of ca$h .. without further investigation
HERE is a tutorial using the "built-in" lens correction filter in PS CS2
IMHO .. lens mfrs always fudge the numbers when claiming their lens hits a certain mark of clarity + quality .. whether it be aperature fidelity or scene re-assemblage in a zoom lens
barrel distortion is where the buildings "huddle" by curving inward .. it is noticeable on buildings, but, I would imagine, it could be spoiling other images as well
these distortions usually happen when you tilt your lens up or down .. typical, also, of architecture photography
Everybody seems to LOVE it .. but .. if you scroll down to the second to last July 16th post .. you find this cryptic comment

It's my standard lens on 5D for walk-around shots, and has replaced my previous 24-70L. Only on a handful of occasions, I miss the f/2.8. The extra range and image stabilization more than make up for it.
Be prepared to correct distortions using a plug-in such as PTLens.
Barrel distorion -- the slight convex curve that appears on straight lines in images -- is the necessary artifact of a camera's zoom lens. But you can use Photoshop to minimize barrel distortion in your images.
