I have copied this from another thread I became involved in, on the suggestion that it would do better here.

Voting should be a privilege - given after certain criteria is met - perhaps length of membership or number of uploads (or commments for those who do not submit images but contribute by their observations and opinions) - personally I feel I was totally unqualified to vote fairly when I first joined this site, depite my sincere efforts.Once that privilege is gained then voting should be compulsory.
Secondly - the number of votes per image should be increased - 16 votes can not possibly give a balanced and fair indication of the worth of any picture.
As far as I know, the number of votes per image is not a predetermined figure - it is dependent on the amount of people voting. When the VB was introduced that figure was typically around 10 - since then it has climbed to over twenty - if it has dropped back to 16, then it is either because less people are voting regularly on images or the volume of uploaded images has increased sharply. The latter is the less likely scenario. If people require a larger sample of votes on their images then they need to vote more often and upload less often as a collective effort going down the less is more/quality versus quantity route.
Maybe we could have a Big Image Cullฎ - we havent had one for ages and they are always good for stirring up a hornets nest of outrage/separating the wheat from the chaff.
hey, I've said it before. If it's in the name of bettering the site, I'd be ok with my work getting the sickle treatment..I've even applied it voluntarily from time to time.
Most of my images reach 20 or more votes.I should have clarified that I think they should be allowed to reach this number or more, rather than being archived at 16. A false impression of their worth is sometime gained when they sit in the early 80's on 16 votes and are then archived. If they were allowed to gain more votes perhaps a more realistic evaluation of their worth would be seen.
Do I detect a slight critisism re uploading too many images?
A cull as in cull our own, or have them chopped ? How would the wheat be separated from the chaff? Not by the c-index? it means little. 80's get archived. 40's get permed.
Quality v. Quantity -does it have to be either/or ?
I think most of us try to upload only our best work, for evaluation by others.
If only top quality images were uploaded how would the rest of us ever learn anything?
a lot do try yes but I wouldnt quantify that as most. it seems lately that for every good piece there is an equal amount of durge more befitting a file sharing community than an artistic one - despite requests and guidelines discouraging people to do so.
Traditionally culls on images in the past have cleaned out both temporary and permanent galleries of older works that have either dated badly or been surpassed by better versions of the same subject or where there is just too much replication of the same subject matter. The concept of the perms is to provide a repository of some of the best work the site has to offer whether it is in outright technical achievement, creativity in concept/effort etc. at the moment though that doesnt seem to be the case.
I would like to offer some thoughts. I wonder if it would be more educational for all if there was a standard list to vote on with each image, instead of 1 to 10 gauge. If a comprehensive list could be developed that would cover the major areas of any work of art then it would not only help facilitate the work of the artist but also help newbies to understand the artistic and technical difficulties and standards that are needed to produce a type of image (i.e birds shots, or fractals, or landscapes, or micros, or illustrations etc.) If one went to a University to be taught the fundamentals of a certain craft, would one not find information on standard practices, skills, and technical knowledge. Take those standards, edit them for space and site needs, and apply them to each image. I'm not sure if I am making my point clear here...my two cents for what it's worth.
