Ive been looking into getting a new digital SLR. Was wondering if anyone could give me any suggestions or pros and cons for the different types. Ive been looking at the Canon- EOS Digital Rebel XTi 10.1, but ive been seeing good reviews for Nixon cameras. Any help would be most appreciated.
Chris there are many recent threads in the photo forums covering all the latest models - have a scan through and im sure you will find something useful.
other than personal preference there is very little to seperate the big two these days. personally, i'd wait until the end of August - a whole raft of new SLR models are expected to be launched then by both Nikon and Canon.
Really, my parents are helping me buy one so I'll inform them of that maby there will be a sale soon after. From what ive researched the Nikon D80 seems to be the one im going with. Thanks for your help Phil.
I have no first-hand experience of this but I think there's really no discernible difference between SLR's at any given price point other than how it feels in the hand. I have a D80 because I went to a shop and tried it out along with the Canon 400D & the Pentax K10D. For me there was only one winner. YMMV.
Im leaning towards the D80 because I've heard theres of a selection of lenses. Least thats what my Dad has told me, and when it comes to researching products my dads like a Guru.
There is a selection of lenses, but no more than there would be if you went with something canon. I would venture a guess there is more canon lenses actually (not really a substantial amount more i don't think). But im not trying to get you to turn away from a d80. From what i have heard its a great camera and likely what i would be going for if i were just entering the slr market at this moment.
To go on what phil has said i don't think the d80 will be dropping in price all that much. My guess is the new models that are to come out will be replacements of the d200 and the d2x. Both more expensive and pretty much in a different league than the d80. I'm not sure what canon is looking to announce though. Haven't been on too many boards lately. Just know that the d80 is still pretty new to be replaced with anything really better.
yes, Nikon are due to replace the 200 and D2X, more expensive but it may mean there are bargains to be had on existing stock 200's - Canon are expected or due to release a 30D, 5D and 1DSMkII replacement this year although its doubtful they will do them all at the same time.
most companies in the technology markets usually do 'spoiler' launches often accompanied with baffling PR spin and equally baffling pricing so if Nikon spring a D200 launch then expect Canon to retaliate with the 30D & 5D replacements or vice versa.
