I think its a good idea a lot of people who browse/visit for wallpaper and only want b&w have a lot of trouble finding them amongst all the purty coloured ones..

A b&w GALLERY is impractical as it would mean every b&w photo regardless of subject would be lumped in together. Personally if I am looking for a city photo, I don't want to have to go through the "Photography->City" gallery and then also have to go through the entire b&w gallery to try and find all the city photos there are in that gallery as well.
A filter would be more practical, and browsing the "Photography" gallery with a b&w filter turned on would serve the same purpose as a b&w gallery anyway. Implementing it won't be so simple I imagine, as the filters we have now rely on preset data (ie the dimensions/ratios of the images) whereas there would be no way for a filter to determine automatically whether a photo is black and white. It would have to rely on the member marking the photos as black and white when they uploaded it (through a check box I would imagine). This would also mean someone would have to go through all the existing perm galleries and manually mark all the black and white photos the site already contains. It's possible, but not a priority in my eyes... personally I can't see myself using it.

[complain] [message] I am hesitant to create new galleries of this type because the proposed gallery topic "black and white" would be based on the creation process instead of the content of the final product. If you'll notice, very few other galleries are dedicated to anything other than the image content. A second consideration is that it would be faily easy for me to write a script which automatically detected black an white photos. So a separate gallery isn't nessesary in order to find them. There is also the issue that the gallery would create an inherant ambiguity when people choose which gallery to put their B&W images in (the black and white gallery or one based on the image content).

*geri has asked that he not be quoted when making spelling mistakes ... we can extrapolate from that that he also doesn't wish to be quoted when making promises
Well, I could've corrected his spelling errors, but then, I'd be altering, albeit slightly, a direct quote. And that can wind up being slippery slope indeed... :o)

An automatic filter would certainly seem like the best option if it is possible. The other option being to let uploaders assign tags or keywords could also work but would only be as reliable as the data that they add to it. Judging by the large amount of images uploaded to the incorrect galleries already - this wouldn’t be an entirely reliable method though.

I'd like to see a Black & White Photography Gallery.
