Monitor Calibration

Can anyone explain how to calibrate a PC monitor without buying an expensive piece of equipment to do it? I find that images are much darker on my Samsung 22inch monitor than they are on my husband's Toshiba laptop and I have used the install CD for the Samsung to alter the settings, but even with brightness set to 100, the images are still too dark. Thanks.

Hi Cindy: monitor calibration can be frustrating or easy. I normally prefer the easy route, but you are not too keen on purchasing an expensive piece of equipment. I dont blame you, that means we have to use the frustrating method. Try this link and it should take you thru the process step by step. http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/
A Samsung is a very good quality monitor, and you should see excellent results. If the process seems to bring any undesirable results, then follow this guide -
place your hands on your hips
storm out of the room
find your husband
sternly look at him
and point your finger
say "it all your fault"
walk back into the room
if nothing happens keep up the routine for a week or
until he buys you a easy to use but expensive monitor calibrator. If you use this method, I will say an extra prayer for your husband. He will need it. :) Moose

Thanks a bunch, Moose. I'm going to try what it says at that link. This Samsung isn't that old so I can't use the other ploy to get a new one, but if I wanted one or a calibrator for that matter, I know my husband would assent to my request for one 'cause he's just a good guy who wants to keep me happy. lol ;0)

Hmmm, maybe your monitor isn't too dark! Could be your husbands laptop monitor is too bright! (which is a good thing if your using it outside). The only way your going to know for sure is with a monitor calibrator. I took a peak on ebay and found a Huey which I use with my laptop since it also measures ambient light and sets the brightness to adjust for room light. It's only $30...hope it's not sold yet. http://cgi.ebay.com/Pantone-Huey-Monitor-Color-Calibrator-MEU101-/280599785382?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item41550cefa6#ht_500wt_1156

Thanks. You could be right. Maybe I'll look for a Huey or Spyder used.
