My Grievance for the Day

I suppose I deserve one, because I haven't griped on these boards before.

It just bugs me when someone votes on one of my images without actually viewing it fullscreen. For example, I uploaded a picture this morning, and shortly after uploading it, it had 2 views and 2 downloads (1 of each being mine), but no votes. I come back a couple hours later to find it has 5 views, but still 2 downloads -- only now 2 members have voted on it.

The rating's mediocre, but that's not what I'm complaining about (we all have our blunders when it comes to uploading images). What irks me is that, unless that 1 person came back to vote later (which is unlikely), those 2 votes are from people who haven't even looked at anything beyond a thumbnail. To really view an image and know what it's about, to truly appreciate it (or the opposite), you have to see it fullscreen, as big as you can make it. Why vote on an image that you haven't actually looked at?

In this example, I personally think that this image is much better when viewed at full size. Again, if someone disagrees, I won't complain about a low vote -- but to agree or disagree, I think you have to see the image as it was meant to be seen, which isn't in reduced form.

Just getting that off my chest. I'll try to go back to my [near] year here spent not complaining after this.

Hear!, hear! I'm definitely on your side of the fence here. Voting without actually viewing is something I consider only one hair short of a really big insult... ^_^ I just don't get those who do it.

(I must say thought that it has happened that I come back and vote for an image that I've viewed some time before. I usually see it in full view then again but that doesn't count in the statistics (if it's the same day as the first full screen view). Sometimes I get interrupted or my browser crash on me since I load so many pages on here simultaneously...)

Yip, I'll agree that that can happen sometimes, and I've probably done it myself once or twice before -- but that still leaves that one person out there who's voted but not looked. I'll have to go on a manhunt! <:

I am in agreement also. In order to vote fairly, you muct view full sized.. It is impossible to see what an image looks like from the thumb.

Maybe the "Vote" button should only come up after someone's looked at the larger size. Not an impossible scripting task. In fact, :), maybe the vote some come up prominently when someone closes the download window. Just an idea.

All of these things have been pondered buy the mods and administrators, besides if people aren't downloading a guys images I would think it would make the voting situation worse by having the vote button only available after a download, wouldn't you have even less votes? You can vote fairly by just looking over a thumbnail,I mean if I see a thumb in the New Image Gallery that I think I like I almost always click on it.From there if I see that it unusual or I just plain like it I will download it in fullview. But no matter if I look at it as full view or not I try to vote on it,I honestly don't understand how if someone takes the time to look over something that another person creates voting without a full view is an insult.

Hehe... I meant that in large as a joke. I guess it was a bit too "drama queenish"... I understand your point perfectly, and I can agree to some degree. I just know perfectly well the feeling of the original post here. It feels like people don't care or take the time, and it feels like you are not fairly judged... In a way I would prefer to have fewer votes over that feeling... But I'm sure most would agree with you.

The other day this happened to me and I must say it took some slow breathing not to come here immediately to say "C'mon people!" I don't like watching numbers but when you've just put an image up and it's got 2 views, no downloads, and 2 "great image" comments, I agree with Klas and Ole that it's disappointing! The thumb in no way shows what work I put into it. It was quite apparent "who." That would have been something I would have preferred not to know. I can't tell you how many votes it had because I don't run to my Caedes control with every visit and quite frankly I had no desire to be double disappointed. I don't watch the raw rating trying to figure out who did, who didn't, and what their vote was while the numbers are still low and easy to figure out. I was raised that voting is a private issue and I've not wavered much in my beliefs there. Fine by me for Caedes to have that access for cheating purposes, but I sure don't want or need it. Anyway people, we are talking seconds here in the big picture (literally). If you don't bother, then I see quite the disadvantage to the author to further comment and/or vote. It might get you a thanks and some honest attention and votes towards your own images until some figure it out, but in the long run, nobody benefits. I know of only a few who can breeze in and out of here long enough to post, not participate, and actually get attention to their images. There's just too much good art out there. Many works are topable. We are here to help eachother. Not play sad games! Until I hear otherwise from Caedes that this is a professional's only site, I'll not be discouraged away by this nonsense! I use my art AND yours to heal, learn, and have fun and I intend to enjoy and appreciate that kind right afforded to me by Caedes regardless of other's behavior here.

There have been quite a few dark thumbnails that ended up getting 9's or 10's from me that wouldn't have gotten near that if I voted on the thumbnail. They just didn't show the skill and detail until I downloaded. Others would have gotten much higher votes than deserved because thumbs often do not show big flaws. Texture is another thing that rarely shows in a thumbnail. I'm sorry, but I've viewed tons of images too and I completely disagree with you tbob. In fact, yours are some of the most complex designs here. Lots of detail, darker colors, and often depth that absolutely does not show in the thumbnails. ;(

Well I'm sure you'll all be glad to know that the new voting system will require a fullscreen view before casting of the vote.

Hey Cool! Thanks Caedes for making it mandatory to download an image in order to vote on it! It's only right that a person should see the image the way it was intended before they determine it's quality. Nice. =0)
