Stereoscopic photography

You know when you have two images side-by-side which look quite similar at a glance, and you cross your eyes, and it forms a 3D image?... My understanding is that they are two photos taken of the same object just from a very slightly different angle, leading to the depth perception created by the brain. e.g. you shoot something like a tree in the foreground and a field in the background, sidestep a bit and take the photo again.

Anyway, does anyone know how to make stereoscopic photos using only one camera and no specialised equipment like a double camera system to get the angle just right?

Thanks in advance. :)

you download one of the many nifty little utilities you can find all over the web that will convert a photo for you to stereoscopic.

My eyes already have enough trouble, staring at a computer screen for hours on end... imagine if I had a desktop that required me to be crosseyed!
