After reading about the suggestion of a 'second chance' feature for members to resubmit images for consideration for the perms, I wonder if an alternative avenue of displaying favourite images may be considered.
A Personal Favourites Gallery where we could submit one of our existing pictures for a specified time, perhaps a month, after which it would be automatically deleted, or alternatively left there until we chose another personal favourite.
I for one would love to see what members consider their own best work. Many images we like ourselves end up with few comments and a low rating, and the opportunity to say 'hey, look, I like this one, have another look' would be a welcome outlet for many who feel perhaps that particular image had not received the attention they thought or hoped it would before being archived. Perhaps it could include all images in any category , or maybe be reserved for archived ones, either would have advantages.
This way they would be there for moderators to view if they so wished, and if something outstanding was noticed may be reconsidered without the formality of members having to ask for reconsideration, a thing which I myself would not be comfortable doing.
It would not, as a formal 'second chance' outlet would, result in further disappointment if the second chance failed, which probably in most cases it would.
I think it would be really interesting to see others' personal faves, and would open another avenue to discover the galleries of members we may not yet have viewed.
I realise this may be a complicated thing to organise, and may indeed be a dumb idea ( I am full of them lol)
I think it's a wonderful idea. There are works of art, photographic and others, that might not have made it for whatever reason, be it technical merit, poor voting reception,or whatever. Seeing a particular artist's own favorites would indeed provide insight into their style, and what, if anything they're trying to say or share with everyone else.
I could wile away the hours
Conferrin' with the flowers
Consultin' with the rain
And my head I'd be scratchin'
While my thoughts were busy hatchin'
If I only had a brain
I think it sounds like a great idea too Eve. Not just so I could have a second chance at making it into the permanent gallery either, per se. I have a few personal favorites myself with low c-index ratings. I'd welcome the chance to give others a second look at my works and have them tell me what they honestly think of it, either positive or negative. After all, I feel that I often get comments that I may not necessarily care for, but make me see the other person's point of view, and ways to improve my art.

I think this idea could easily be implemented within the framework of the "personal galleries" that we have discussed previously (the personal galleries system would allow members to assign custom "tags" to any images on the site and create galleries from the tagged images). One of the defautl tags could be something along the lines of "my best work".
I saw a peanut stand, heard a rubber band,
I saw a needle that winked its eye.
But I think I will have seen everything
When I see an elephant fly.
