Kinkaku-ji Temple by hermanlam
This image was taken at Kyoto, Japan, and is of Kinkaku-ji Temple. Also formally known as Rukoonji, and now also known as the Golden Pavilion (for obvious reasons), Kinkaku-ji is covered in 6 kg of gold. It was initially built in 1397 to be part of a residence for the retired shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. It was converted into a Zen Temple after the Shogun's death in 1408. Having been destroyed by fire set by a fanatic monk in 1950, it was rebuilt in 1955. It currently houses sacred Buddhist relics.

Fuji-San by hermanlam
This image was taken at Hakone, Japan, a tourist area close to the base of Mount Fuji. We visited for two days, the first of which it was cloudy and Mount Fuji was nowhere to be seen. Luckily for us, the morning of our departure proved to be a clear day, and we were able to catch this sight. Mount Fuji is Japan's highest peak at 3776 metres (12338 feet). It has not erupted since 1708.

Blue skies for a wedding . . . . by LynEve
The Church of The Good Shepherd, Tekapo, NZ
I was pleased to get this shot minus tourists - it does not happen often.
Minutes after I took this a Japanese wedding party arrived, making a lovely sight. I was tempted to get a few shots but respected their privacy. I was told that wedding parties sometimes come from Japan just for the photo shoots, having already had the ceremony in their own country.

The church was built as a memorial to the pioneers of the Mackenzie Country, the foundation stone laid by HRH the Duke of Gloucester, on January 15, 1935. The builders were instructed that the site was to be left undisturbed, including the matagouri bushes, (the very thorny shrub that can be seen to the right of the building). Rocks already on wall lines had to remain and stones for the wall were to be gathered within a radius of five miles , and be left in their natural condition.

MBG - Japanese Garden III by Hottrockin
"Garden of pure, clear harmony and peace." The largest traditional Japanese Garden in North America, Seiwa-en covers 14 acres, including a 4-1/2 acre lake surrounded by expansive lawns and a meandering path. This is a chisen kaiyu-shiki, or "wet strolling garden," a style developed by wealthy landowners of the late Edo period in 19th century Japan. Koichi Kawana, designer of Seiwa-en, said that a Japanese garden cannot be fully explained in words, but must be experienced. The garden must be seen with the mind, not just the eyes, allowing the imagination to move beyond the obvious to discover deeper spiritual meanings. Every aspect of Seiwa-en has been subtly refined to encourage visitors to slow down, to contemplate and observe.

Any and all comments and critiques welcome!!

Mates - Part 2 / Follow Me by Toto_san
A funny pair at Himeji Zoo, in Himeji, Japan. The grey herons live all around Japan. You can find them in cities like Tokyo, in parks where they can find ponds. They are not afraid of people. They like to stay at Zoos, because they can eat with the other birds when it is feeding time. Taken with a Nikon D40.

Man I love Japan. This is Himeji Castle near Kyoto Japan. This picture tries to capture how amazing the castle really is. Being there in person is the only way to feel how incredible it is. In 1601 Terumasa Ikeda, son-in -law of the Shogun Ieyasu Tokugawa, rebuilt this castle into a five storied monster. Himeji was very important to the Shogun because of its defensive positioning.

On this photograph can you the c not well see but the other photograph of aside seeing you him clearly. The Comma (Polygonia c-album) is a species of butterfly, common in the United Kingdom and with a distribution across Europe and temperate Asia to Japan and south to Morocco. Similar species are found in the United States and Canada. It has a white marking on its underwings resembling a comma. The wings have a distinctive ragged edge, apparently a cryptic form as the butterfly resembles a fallen leaf. The caterpillars are also cryptic, resembling a bird dropping.

Golden Pavillion by Malificent
This is a picture I took of Kinkaku-Ji (the Golden Pavillion) in Kyoto, Japan. It's even shiner in person than it is on film. This picture was taken on a gorgeous October day with a Sony DSC-P200. This is also one of many pictures I took of the temple; I chose to upload this one because of the reflection of the tree and sky in the pond in the foreground. Also, it was hard to get any sort of angle without people in it!

Low Fog on the Beach by verenabloo
It was one of those lovely days at the beach! There was a low cloud causing a bit of a fog-like effect, almost laying on the sand and Ocean. But it was cool and crisp yes pleasant. The Pacific here at Cannon Beach is the nicest in Oct and Nov of the year, as that's when the Straights of Japan come rolling in. These monoliths are part of the Haystack Group of Rocks at this coastal town. It's always quite a view to sit and look at or walk near. When the tide goes out, there are wonderful tidepools to see and touch little underwater critters such as starfish, sea urchins etc..... Thanx for viewing and wishing you were all here to enjoy the sea.

Kiyomizu-Dera by hermanlam
This image was taken in Kyoto, Japan, and is of Kiyomizu Temple. It is one of Kyoto's most famous landmarks, and is currently vying for title as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World (check out www.n7w.com). Also known as the Pure Water Temple, it was originally built in 798 by the Buddhist monk Enchin, of the Hosso Sect of Japanese Buddhism. Like Kinkakuji-Mae, the temple was burned down and rebuilt several times over the years, most recently in 1633. This image is of the Hondo, the main hall of the temple complex, whose veranda is supported by 139 wooden pillars.

Osaka Castle #2 by bif000
Osaka Castle is one of those places steeped in history going back to the Shoguns of 16th century Japan. There is no doubt it is an imposing, impressive castle. That is until you learn that what you are seeing was rebuilt 1990's and houses a modern museum including elevators. The inside does not resemble a Japanese castle at all. I walked away feeling somewhat disappointed. Hope you like the picture nonetheless.

Especially For Rokh by Toto_san
I had a discussion with Rokh. He will understand it... It is a bit something about the prices in Japan. This photo has been taken in Osaka. Japanese restaurants are very interesting, because they put the wax copies of each plates and food and drink into the display. It is a huge help for foreigners if you don't know what to eat, at least you know what looks good and you can choose easily. The other reason why they have this kind of display everywhere, because the most restaurants have only Japanese menu card. That's impossible for us to understand anything at all. The wax copies generally show the components before cooking. Good appetite...(Japanese never say this.)

Steller's Sea Eagle by hirschikiss22
"The Steller’s sea-eagle may be one of the rarest raptors in the world. Very little is known about these birds of prey, due to the remote nature of their primary habitat. They breed on the Kamchatka Peninsula, the coastal area around the Sea of Okhotsk, the lower reaches of the Amur River, and on northern Sakhalin and the Shantar islands of Russia. They spend much of the warm season in this region, and some stay here year round. Many others migrate slightly southward for the winter to the southern Kuril Islands and to Hokkaido, Japan, where food is more plentiful. But that's it! This is the only region of the world where this species is found." Animal Bytes. Except this one was part of the bird show at Hogle Zoo today in Salt Lake City. He was an interesting bird to watch and he had a quirky personality.

The Escondida copper, gold and silver pit mine in Chile’s Atacama Desert, as seen in this image from the ASTER satellite. The mine is at an elevation of about 10,000 feet, and produces 127,000 tons per day of ore. Bit of an unusual space shot really but I thought the myriad of textures and muted colours made an interesting desktop image.
