While a good good idea, Cal.. your suggestion is photography oriented only, I believe. Would like to see, if possible, a topic suggested that is more inclusive for the membership.

It still might be doable though;

".. or any way to get subject clear while showing action or movement."

... ...

Try to keep in mind, when suggesting a topic:

i) Open to all genres of art. Not just photography.

ii) Add a short description (one or two lines is sufficient, methinks) , so 'we' know what the artistic aim/intention of the subject matter is.

iii) Try not to repeat previous topics.

Considers all photography "stop action". :)

I think that stop action could be done with art too, Les. It would just be more difficult to draw than to photograph.

But it's an intriguing idea. I kind of like the idea of the challenge.

I also want to thank you (Thank you!) for continually reminding folks to be all inclusive in their suggestions, as we all aren't photographers.

What exactly is From my Doorstep? - some explanation as to how this is to be interpreted would be helpful.

I'm pitching the topic of Funny, because we have so many contributors with an excellent sense of humor and I think we could all use a few more smiles and giggles.

"Tell me how photographic manipulation is done in so called ARTwork???"

Defintion courtesy of wikipedia:

"Photo manipulation involves transforming or altering a photograph using various methods and techniques to achieve desired results. Some photo manipulations are considered skillful artwork while others are frowned upon as unethical practices, especially when used to deceive the public, such as that used for political propaganda, or to make a product or person look better.

Depending on the application and intent, some photo manipulations are considered an art form because it involves the creation of unique images and in some instances, signature expressions of art by photographic artists. For example, Ansel Adams employed some of the more common manipulations using darkroom exposure techniques, such as burning (darkening) and dodging (lightening) a photograph.[1][2] Other examples of photo manipulation include retouching photographs using ink or paint, airbrushing, double exposure, piecing photos or negatives together in the darkroom, scratching instant films, or through the use of software-based manipulation tools applied to digital images. There are a number of software applications available for digital image manipulation, ranging from professional applications to very basic imaging software for casual users."

Examples..

The Main Galleries: Photography->Manipulation

From your own personal galleries, Cal:

"Sunny Rain"

And although your "Sunny Rain" remains in the "Nature" galleries, I consider HDR to be photographic manipulation. In that the post sweetening/editing goes beyond that of simply performing colour, contrast, exposure, etc.. adjustments.

@ Mvillian - There are numerous examples of artwork that is done via photo manipulation on Caedes, Cal.

I think that it's generally done by using software that manipulates photographic images into the appearance of an artistic medium (oil paint, watercolor, pencil, etc.). Or by overlaying artwork on top of a photograph (such as colorizing a photo or artistically adding something to an image that wasn't originally in the photograph, like a trompe l'oeil).

There are a couple of good examples of quality "artwork" via photographic manipulation in the current contest.

I thought "From My Doorstep" could mean the scene immediately around where we all live either inside or outside. It could be a front or back door or a window ie, very close to home.

That is great but to say every suggestion has to be all inclusive is totally ridiculous! I would say let anyone nominate any subject they wish without being treated like a crazed rule breaker! when I joined in 2005 it did not seem to have such foolishness .....what happened! I am done with the stupidity....Good day!

Thanks for weighing in, Steve.. although, I would much rather the member who suggested the topic simply post up a short one or two line synopsis of their suggested topic to avoid any confusion.

ii) Add a short description (one or two lines is sufficient, methinks) , so 'we' know what the artistic aim/intention of the subject matter is.

... ...

Narrow down the possible interpretations, simply put, so.. that when it comes to voting.. 'we' (speaking generally here) are all on the same page.

Les, I'm sorry I didn't make it clear in my message but the suggestion of "From My Doorstep" is my suggestion.

I would like to say that it is NOT difficult to suggest topics that can be all-inclusive for various art and photography mediums.

I also do not have a problem with allowing people to suggest whatever topics they wish, whether all-inclusive or not. But that decision is ultimately up to Caedes and the people that he has recruited to assist him in the running of his site.

What I DO have a problem with is someone behaving like a childish, petulant asshole, berating the site, its users, and its inclusive community, simply because he imagines that he was slighted.

And I do mean imagine. Purmusic did not treat you as though you were crazed. You created that image of yourself, all by yourself.

Purmusic did not call you out, Mvillian, but I am. If you think that it is SO unfair to you to try to make an effort to be fair to everyone else, then please feel free to make good on your threat and leave. I certainly won't stop you.

No worries, Steve.

If you could, though, in the future.. even when 'you' (just speaking generally here) think it should be obvious of what your suggested topic means, how it could be interpreted.. it's artistic aim/intention.. add in a line or two. That would be muchly appreciated.

First off I am not mad at anyone I love this site and hope to continue to post! Yeah I got carried away but I have posted over 500 photos and have never had any issues like this before! I did not realize the poll had to be all inclusive because it seems to me that is why you have a poll to see what has the most support! Even though, stop action by no means should be considered photo only! That only added to the feeling of being singled out for no reason! It is my OPINION that Sarcasm, belittling and little notes like this about issues that should not be an issue turns people off and that may be one of the reasons the contest only had 13 entries compared to what it used to be! I really like this site I do not want confrontation with anyone I just post my opinion and was not the first one to call names or cuss but I am the only one who had my post moved I do not know if I am allowed to post here and have an opinion? BUT this will surely be the last I say about it!

"I did not realize the poll had to be all inclusive because it seems to me that is why you have a poll to see what has the most support!"

It doesn't have to be an all-inclusive topic, Cal. And I even made mention in my first response to your post/comment as to how your suggestion would/could work.. as an all inclusive topic suggestion.

Phrased as it was though?

It could be construed as a photography only topic suggestion.

And where I am coming from in all of this is..

I have personal messages from members (those that created fractals and CGI (Computer Generated Images) works/pieces) that have left the site, because they became disheartened by the lack of interest on display.. on site.. towards their kind of 'art'.

And I am not putting the blame at your feet here, to be clear.

However, despite my posting the same words over and over.. time and time again.. and seeing photographic-centric topics constantly being put forth.. it is a bit frustrating.

Maybe the easiest way to explain things might be as follows..

If you saw, month in and month out.. where the site contests are concerned.. nothing but topics for fractals and fractals only.. would your interest and enthusiasm for posting to the site here wane? Or, at least where the site contests are concerned?

I submit.. that it might.

I have the greatest admiration for and appreciation of images created by means other than photography. I have even ventured into that realm myself(not terribly successfully)

It is disappointing to hear that members who create CGI and fractal images have actually left the site because of lack of interest. Surely for the purposes of these contests those disenchanted artists are just as able to post a subject suggestion as anyone holding a camera is. If it is interesting enough it will be voted for. Change can only happen from within. Leaving is hardly likely to effect change.

It all sounds a little childish. The answer is obvious - separate contests.
However I suggested that solution years ago - it was not popular, in fact it was ridiculed.

This current group of suggestions may be extra challenging for non photographers but all are possible.
Where are their (the non-photographers) suggestions? If any are theirs, where are the explanations ?

I have just looked at the past 20 or so contests. As far as I can see each one was open to all genres but the interesting thing is most were won by a photograph. That begs the question - are there just not enough non photographic entries (likely because they are apparently leaving the site) or is the ratio of voters unequal (that makes the assumption (that I believe to be wrong) that a photographer would vote for a photo) The image most fitting the subject in the mind of the voter should be the one chosen by them. Maybe that does not always happen.

Separate contests - any one else agree?

A contest specifically for CGI, fractals, abstracts etc would not only be good for those artists but also for others who could see and compare a whole group of them together.

Often it is well nigh impossible to compare a fabulous photo to an amazing abstract that are both trying to adhere to the same subject. It's the same as comparing apples with oranges - they are both fruits but very different.
CGI images and photos are both art but can be difficult to compare. No one would compare a stone sculpture with a piece of origami and choose the 'best' one. Why do we try to compare photography with computer generated art ??
