Yes, it could certainly be a lot more realistic. However, it was not a serious attempt at rendering a planet. Rather, it was just a fractal that was post-processed in Photoshop and looks very planet-like. This is why I put in the fractal gallery and not the space gallery.

I think it would be fair to say that the fractal is not obvious in this one. The underlying fractal is an Ikenaga Map. However, the subsequent layering both in Ultrafractal and Photoshop means that it is not a traditional or obvious fractal pic.
Ironically, fractals are very tied up with chaos theory, and there is no better example of that than in clouds and weather systems (indeed one of the earliest proponents of chaos theory, whose name I forget, was a metereologist amongst other things). Anyway, I am digressing somewhat here; the fractal is the planet itself and everything that you see (just as much of the world around us is a huge fractal). This particular fractal is not one of the obvious or pretty ones, like Mandelbrots.
Let's just say it was a bit of an experiment, and probably not one that I will repeat.

Thanks, though it was pretty much a fluke. Maybe in the distant future I will play around with some modelling program and actually create a planet. There's something nice about the images.

I like it but i think that the angle of the shadow should be less straight i think it should dip and rise some to give it that extra realism, other than that great job
I like the idea of a fractal planet - very neat. I'm wondering how much is a result of clever post-processing (not something to be knocked or sneezed at, of course) and how much was really in the original fractal itself. I don't know if it matters, but it affects what this means in a sense or what it symbolises - not the image itself, of course.
