This is an 1100 century fortress 30km south of Salzburg, Austria. As an aside, one of my favorite shots from Sound of Music was filmed just below and to the left of the farm house at the top. It's a secret location they don't tell you about. Maria is singing the do-re-mi song to the children in this meadow with the fairytale castle in the background.

I fortgot to mention that to get this shot my wife and I had to make a difficult climb up the Tennegebirge Massif. I was breathing pretty hard by the time I got to this spot. We eventually got way above treeline and did some spelunking in a natural cave using carbide lamps and magnezium flares.

I do get the feeling I am at the cinema watching in intense color. Bet you were singing (in your head since you were out of breath) "Climb Every Mountain" rather than "Do-Re-Mi?" Anyway, aside from the view you have me singing a favorite medly.

Wonderful, stunning shot! Great panoramic vista, fairly-tale feeling, puts you right in the story. Good framing, great perspective, pretty colors, this picture has it ALL.

Thanx for all the nice comments. I was actually sinigng "The hills are alive with the sound of music" as I climbed. About the color. It was a tough shot as the air was a bit misty from some rain and the sun burned out part of the castle. I had just gotten Deke McClelland's Photoshop CS2 training DVD to review for one of my magazines. So I used some of his techniques to bring out the detail and color in the washed out areas. They worked amazingly well. I thought about desaturating the picture as a whole, but decided against it. Austria has the greenest greens I have ever seen. Note: later in the trip I was able to find the most top secret SOM location of them all the actual mountain top where Julie sings the opening number.

Hi there!...you know I have a huge beautiful poster of this castle...surrounded by snow..but I have never seen anything to show the back parts...this is such a georgious viewpoint! How fortunate you were to be able to "have enough breath" within you to go here to capture this lovely view!! This is a breathtaking awe inspiring photo! The village in the background...as it lays "sleeping" in that beautiful blue haze..and the tops of the trees being painted by the sunlight...just so soft and pretty...Yes I can just about hear you singing at the top of your lungs...its no wonder you ran out of breath!! It is SOOO nice to see your postings once again Peter. Espcially something as beautiful as this. Wanna sell me a poster of this? smiling....

The height is amazing (worth the climb!), the slight mist and coloring gives it a surreal quality. It looks like the perfect place for a daydream...

Oh it is a place for a daydream...this whole area of Austria...hell all of Austria is a place to daydream. I love the place. Sitting on the side of an alp with a nice slice of that wonderful Austrian bread stuffed with local cheese and sausge with some of their sweet mustard and local beer, overlooking scenes like this are a great way to unwind from a complicated American life.

Very nice scenery with the castle for focal point. I like these alpine landscapes. Thanks to share it with us Peter :-)
How do you explain the blue saturation in the shadow?

I suspect the blue saturation came from the mist in the air that was a light haze almost completely obfuscating the more distant objects. When I burned in and increased saturation with the sponge, the mist naturally headed in the blue direction, but overall, I felt it was much better to see the background details and live with the blue mist. I did try to make it more neutral but the changes impacted other parts of the image in a negative way. Hope that's a good answer for you Pierre. I do appreciate your comments always.

They prolly stole it from me <grin>.

LadyVader, you certainly can visit this place. It's about 35K south of Salzburg on good roads through spectacular country. You'll be one of the few people who know where to look for the SOM location. The ice caves are well worth the effort to reach because there are no commercial lights, just carbide lanterns and spectacular magnesium flares. Very cool indeed...litterally. The Castle has a wonderful bird of prey exhibit and show that is totally worth seeing as well. I recommend you start saving right now for next summer.
