And now for something completely different. Kristi Victoria Keaton is one of my favorite models. You can find her stock shots at DeviantART. except for a few tubes I created in 3ds Max, this image was created in Photoshop CS2 using tools availabe back to version 7. It took 16 layers and 7 layer masks to get what I wanted and I'm still not completely satisfied. This is just another adventure in my quest for cool things to do with Photoshop.

Wow Peter, this is outstanding, a fantastic piece of work. You might not be satisfied, but I give you high marks for this. Really, take a bow, you deserve to. A well deserved 10 & I'm only sorry I can't give you more.

Art is the perception of the creator. Meaning is the perception of the viewer. acceptance is the perception of society.

Hello Peter..I'm not sure what to say about this "creation" of yours..but it is something very unique and elegant...and technical! lol It makes me think and ponder on the whole image. She is a beautiful woman..and then for you to come up with such an idea...its magnificient! I can't imagine how you did this...and it must have taken a lot of time and patience...it's gorgeous...I like how only the eye and cheek are the piece that is seperate from the face. It shows off her eyes even more...You are a very talented man my friend! Bravo on this awe inspiring photo!!

Nice concept, but I have a couple complaints: the detached part of her face looks exactly the same, except in a different place. Also, the coil is a little flat.

Thank you all for the encouragement.

Zero, you're right. The coil didn't look quite as flat in the original image, but I rendered them in a separate application and did not get the light at the proper angle. Also notice this image is a bit pixelated around the edges. This too degrades the 3D look. I had to cheat and blow it up to full size because I reduced the size to send it to a friend and then accidentally copied over the original PS layer file. But I don't think I agree with you about the detached part looking wrong. I'll consider your comment at length, but to me, the face and the detached part are in the same lighting and thus should look the same...It detaches from the inside on three small hydrolic arms, for maintainance. I'll fool around with some shadows to see if it helps. Thanx for the comments.

Nice , i like what you have done with the concept ; but if i may point out 1 thing ; i would have left the right eye in the original color.
other than that i like it all.

WOW!! This is really quite kewl and you did an amazing job making something that took so many layers to complete, look so damn integrated. Your cutouts and edge work are phenominal, is that due to the software you were using? Or just an extremely steady hand with a mouse? Dave

Kodo and heddon,
I see your point Kodo, that way it would appear that her right eye is disconnected with the slab of her face. But my vision is that nothing gets disconnected. The side of the face comes out on microhydrolic actuators that maintain the connections.
Heddon, I actually used a Wacom which is a lot easier to draw with than a mouse, but you can do as good a job using the polygonal lasso. I have to give most of the credit to the software, Photoshop CS2. I set up a layer style that automatically created the edge effect that makes her skin look thick. I had to doctor it just a bit where her hair was involved. Although it takes a lot of time, this sort of thing is fairly easy to do and their are tutorials on the web (google "Celebrity Cyborg") That's partly how I learned, but most of it is just appling techniques and creativity you already have.

Wow, if this was crisper, I would have thought it was a screenshot from Star Trek! (I am not a junkie, but that is a compliment...movies have a way of making everything look realistic. Take the snowy scene in the Phantom of the Opera or basically anything from the latest X-men. Seamless!) Your creativity and innitiative impress me more than anything, so keep the ingenuity flowing. You picked a good subject, and the composition is well thought out. Maybe you could try a collaberation with someone who is an absolute guru in rendering artificial sci-fi junk?

This is a very nice overall image, and it looks like quite a lot of work went into it. I think I'd like it more if she wasn't so centered, maybe a little farther to the left, that way you can follow her gaze a little farther, even if there isn't something specific in the frame for her to be focusing on (which she might not be doing anyway, as about half of her face is not currently well-attached).
