I first met this fine looking lady last Friday (then again for all I know this is a fine looking gent). But before she would assent to having her photo taken there was the matter of the posing fee. She insisted on having at least 3 fat little field mice. So I spent the weekend hunting high and low for them (mostly low). Today we met at the agreed upon place and the transaction took place. This is one of the results. This started off as three separate shots merged together and then copped down to size. Before you complain, I realize the sky could use a lot of work. It was an overcast day with absolutely no colour in the sky. And I tried everything I could think off to add some colour to it, but it just wasn't working for me. Enjoy your view and your comments welcomed.

She looks kinda haughty Wen, Are you sure the field mice were enough? Or did your power of persuasion get to her?

Nice angle here, but I might have cloned out the green branch coming across the trunk of the tree. I like the framing work.

Wendell...
I really admire anyone who can get off a shot like this. Absolutely spectacular photo. How did you get this close? By the way, love the framing. I agree about the branch in the foreground, but considering the subject, I say it looks great as is.

The lack of sky/cloud detail doesn't bother me one hoot, Wendell. You've got a really clear shot of the main subject in his lair - great detail on him/her and the tree trunk. Well composed; and, I think, the framing you've got here is spot on.

Wendell - The owls coloring didn't hide her well against the green leaves - but it made an excellent color contrast for this shot. It's amazing what a bird will do for a few mice! Very nicely presented as well. Thad

Yep, not much you can do about the sky. But, you certainly got incredible details, both in the owl and the tree, that I like very much! As John said, "well worth the effort"! Excellent work, Wendell! And, your story was delightful :)

Oh Wendell, that is one sleepy eyed owl! Considering they sleep during the day and are awake during the night, no wonder he is tired. I love how clear he is and the mossy tree also. So the sky isn't important. I am so happy you took this lovely photo.
YOu must have enjoyed taking it too! Something to be proud of, that's for sure. Verena

Wow, what a thrill it must have been to get this photo. Don't worry about the sky, it's fine. Skies are very often gray and boring and it's better to leave it alone than push it to try and make something that isn't there.

Interesting and beautiful capture. The colors of the leaves and the tree trunk and the owl combined simply makes this picture great.
