This is just an old rickety bench sitting out in the yard. Not much of a garden to look at, or much of a view to take in for that matter. Another experimental shot; playing around with the focus settings to see how soft I could get the shot while still retaining some detail. Hope you enjoy and your comments welcomed.

Hi, Wendell...

I love this photo and I like your experimentation. It's dark and moody with a wisp of color. My eye was drawn to the red roses which are far off center. I'm afraid of the dark - photowise. I wouldn't have the guts to use so much negative space. The lighting reminds me of the works of Rembrandt. Now please tell me how you did this.

Wendell - For a rickety bench with no view, it looks very inviting in this photo. The graduated light from dark lower left to light upper right leads the eye across this softly lit scene to focus on the bench and red flowers. With the frame, it is presented nicely. Thad

It's certainly a very 'emotial' shot, Wendell. There's an air of sadness and neglect about it. Although the red flowers add a touch of hope too!

It conveys a feeling of being distant. The touch of brightness from the flower reminds that there is life. Makes you wonder who is going to occupy the seat in the next scene. Beauty.

It does hold some think special, and it is one you have to look twice at.What i see is a lonely place and i am looking through a steamy window and at the same time feeling down in the dumps. So what do i think to the picture now, very good and a scene of plenty.Well done.

A very poignant shot, Wendell. It's like the previous occupant had recently died.

Wow, Wendell I really like your experiment - It tells a story of some kind - really draws the viewer to imagine their own story. Well done.

I think the soft focus works. Very dream like.

The dark area to the left gives it a diagonal light gradient that just draws my eye up and right away from the bench and the wonderful flower. I think I would have burnt the image a little centre left and then added a vignette to darken the edges so that the image concentrated on the flower and bench more.

However, the more I look at it the more I like the gradient drawing my eye away, but the darkness follows me and is unsettling. Perhaps that is the power of the image, so all I said above may be wrong.

It is a very striking image and well worth the experiment. I wish more people moved outside the box like this.

Amazing. There's nothing about this that's supposed to work! The focal point is still too soft, subject centered, shaded area is featureless...but it's perfect. You couldn't change anything without losing the dreamlike lazy summer feel of the whole. Thank you.
