From what I can tell this is some sort of wasp given its narrow waist line. Either that or it's a bee sucking in its gut. Whatever it is it was pretty darn docile for a wasp considering their reputation for chasing down people for miles who look at then sideways and wink while making backhand compliments about their upbringing.

Wendell this is a good close up, it can be creepy looking at them through a zoom lens. Lol! I like the color of that flower too my friend. I stopped at the calendar garden today, and I could swear a bumble bee was checking me out, I finally got of his area. He would hover close by, and zip around and then hover again. yikes!! What a great shot. Think you should have cropped it tighter (Top and Left) as the detail and angle is really nice. Worth filling the screen if you can do it without being stung.

I agree with both Sandi and Doug. The shot's one of your best...at least one of your best that doesn't have a park bench. I'm not sure how you kept the noise under control. Excellent detail work, fantastic colors and flawless lighting.

Lovely detail in this photo and I do light the light in this photo it as superb balance plus stunning colours in the flower.

Wasps are creepy critters, once when I was 3 years old and my sister was not yet 2, we were chased by a gang of wasps, hunted down, stung several times... I've harbored ill feelings towards wasps ever since. Although this is a good portrait of one, I hope you'll forgive me if I get some Raid and spray it till it dies.... hehehe

I'm afraid I'm with Mary on this one - stung multiple times I'm not a lover and have a hard time looking at them in pictures or TV. However this is a very good shot - I think it just awoke from winter that's why it's so docile.
