...and let's talk about insurance.

I found this, the carapace of a cicada, hanging from a leaf on a scraggly little bush that's been doing its best to grow for the past several years when it isn't being hindered by insect pests or being accidentally mowed over because some people don't watch where they're going when operating heavy equipment. But I digress this isn't about the bush. So being an empty shell made it real easy to sneak up on it and blast it with a camera lens from a real close distance. Or at least you would think until the wind starts bouncing the leaf all over the place and you have to wait for a semblance of calm before readjusting the camera and maybe getting to slam home the shutter button at least once before everything goes crazy once again. And you're left wondering: well why don't I just put a tarp around it to stop the breeze? Well because then you'd need to pound some stakes in the ground. And do you have any stakes?. Of course not; so now its a trip to the hardware/garden store to buy some stakes, and then you get to thinking wouldn't it be nice to have some steaks tonight. So you know where you're off to next. Well by the time you get home you've forgotten all about the bug and realize you've also forgotten the charcoal for the bbq.

So you see nothing scary about the bug at all.

Enjoy and your comments welcomed.

Your narrative reminds of the song "There is a hole in the bucket dear Lisa" by Harry Belafonte. Very good shot of the scary insect. Concentrate on the moving leaf and will it to stop moving with your mental strength Wendell. But now no need you did well already!

They are so ugly, and yet so darn interesting to look at. Even if this was not just a shell, I don't think he would have moved too fast for you. :) Very good close up, almost too good. :) tigs=^..^=

Oooh - this is as close as I'm getting and I have my arms stretched as far as I can to reach the keyboard - I'm not a bug lover in general but really hate cicadas - there I said it. But I've you props for this capture.

My husband and I used to go to antique stores every week...never bought anything much, though! lol I used to mentally pick the very worst object in the place that was for sale. One time it was two cicada shells in a small black shadow-box frame. The bugs were side by side, and one was covered in silver glitter, the other in purple glitter! Unbelievable!

Anyway, back to your image...this is a great close-up. Thank heavens it's dead. One of my cats brings the live ones into the house, the other cat prefers to bring in grasshoppers. One year I had jumping and buzzing all over the house!

Anyway, back to your image...really sharp frontal image with soft lighting. Well-captured.

Wendell, you really managed to get a great image of the carapace of the cicada without having to resort to getting in your car, driving to the home center, purchasing said stakes etc, etc when you pick up the charcoal, I take my steak medium rare - excellent closeup and narrative!!!:-):-):-)!!

Super close up of this cicada, I remember collecting their skeletons as the transform off of pine trees in North Carolina. I was a truly tom-boy, lol.
