A surprise to see today while slowly walking up to the edge of a pond. This Behemoth of a Snapping Turtle was asleep with just his face peeking out of the water for some fresh air. I threw on the Polarizing lens and took a few shots before he "caught on" to me. Notice his body looks just like a rock burried in the mud. He simply disapeared after tucking back in.
(This clearly wont be an award winner unless you read the description, and take a closer look.)
Thanks for stopping by, as always.

What an amazing picture! Didn't know they would bury themselves into the bottom like that. Thank you for not only a unique photo but also for giving me a "learning something new" every day opportunity! :-)

I had figured this one out before I read your description and was hoping I was right (I gave it a 9). They can be elusive critters when they want to be, and getting a shot like this takes a fast eye to recognize the subject soon enough to take advantage of it, and experience to get the polarizer on quick enough to shoot without spooking him. My only experience with a snapper was when I was driving through our town one day with my son (who was about 4 at the time). We came over a rise and I slammed on the brake because there was a snapper (with about a 2' dia. shell) sitting in the middle of the street with his mouth wide open, hissing. The closest river or pond was about 1-1/2 mile away! He certainly wasn't hiding. Your photo illustrates why sometimes it's not a good idea to walk through a pond -- much better to walk around. There have been instances here of people being bitten by snappers that way. The only recommendation I would give is to apply a little bit of Photoshop's burn tool to that light smudge in the middle of the photo. I tried it on a copy I downloaded and it looks pretty natural.
