Today will be the Final opening Day for the Mets at Shea Stadium. It wlll face the wrecking ball at the end of the season. It will be replaced by CitiField currently under construction right next door. Shea was opened in April of 1964. It is part of Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. Besides the Mets, Even the Yankees played their home games back in 74 and 75 when Yankee stadium underwent extensive renovation. And also part of the 1998 season. Besides baseball, Shea was also home to the New York Jets from 64-83. Other events included the historical Beatles concerts in 64 and 66,Summer Festival for Peace Janis Joplin/Jimi Hendrix 1970, Grand Funk Railroad sold out Shea faster than the Beatles back in 71. Other concerts included Jethro Tull 76, The Who/The Clash 82 , Simon & Garfunkel 83,The Police 83,The Rolling Stones 1989, Elton John/Eric Clapton 92,Bruce springsteen 2003. Billy Joel will play 2 sold-out shows this summer dubbed "The Final Play At Shea". And the historical Pope John Paul II visit in 1979. Although It's an old,ugly and crumbling cookie cutter stadium. It holds alot of great memories for millions of New Yorkers. Please share your thoughts and memories below. And, LET'S GO METS!

Jim, This is a wonderful tribute to such a staple for your city. So much history has taken place here and it's a shame it has to come down. Down with the old and up with new!

That's a great shot of Shea. I have never been there, or Yankee Stadium. The new stadiums they design these days are much better for viewing games for the fans than they used to be. I know you will love the Mets new one.

A great shot...never been at any stadium..i am sure lot of memories will be left by many sports fans and concert goers:)

Man I am going to miss going to Shea, I have tix to 5 of their games this year which is sad cause i am a Met's fan.
