Buckskin is a color of horses; it also refers to other things that are the color of a buckskin horse, such as the color of some breeds of dogs. The horse has a tan or gold colored coat with black points (mane, tail, and lower legs). Buckskin occurs as a result of the cream dilution gene acting on a bay horse. Therefore, a buckskin has the Extension, or "black base coat" (E) gene, the agouti (A) gene (see bay for more on the agouti gene), which restricts the black base coat to the points, and one copy of the cream gene, which lightens the red/brown color of the coat to a tan/gold. This looks so real I could almost pat the horse's neck - I wish I could. There's the delicate 'sweet hay' aroma of horse in my nostrils. :-).
What originally drew me in (when just looking at the smaller image) was the almost stormy atmosphere infused with warm sunlight. Lovely image.

Now that is SO interesting! We lease out some of our land to people who need a place of pasture for their horse, and I grew u in SD so I'm familiar with horses, but sure didn't know about the buckskin colour! I'm so glad you gave us a wonderful explanation on that. Sure was interesting. And this horsie photo is wonderful.And I love the sky in this shot. That just gives a great feeling.
