The Polar Blast we are experiencing here in New Zealand is being referred to as a '50 year event', and is causing havoc throughout the country. Unable to go anywhere today - so decided to make use of the snow by taking these apples and my camera outside. The lemons had fallen off the tree nearby.
This was taken after a heavy fall of what turned out not to be snow but Graupel, which forms when supercooled droplets of water freeze on falling snowflakes, forming 2–5 mm balls.
Something new learned today - the weatherman on TV told us about this Graupel :) All I know is, it it bitterly bitterly cold out there!
Taken with Canon 450D.
Hope this is a cooling shot for those of you in hot climes:) Comments very welcome.

Fine idea for a shot Lyn. Your polar event is kind of scary. I hope it is not a signal of how things will be here this winter! Not looking forward to that...

Have seen this morning scenes from New Zealand Lyn. The wind chill factor must be making it even worse. Nice still life in the snow.

Lyn - It's a mere 25C here today. Last week, this would have been a welcomed sight as it was 34C and very humid. I am sorry you are experiencing such bitter cold, but, am glad that you are using it to photographic advantage. I like that there is some Graupel on the fruit, adding a bit more realism to the fine still life. My only critique is that the dof is a bit shallow and the fruit not in the foreground is slightly blurred. Stay warm! Thad

I live in cold climate here up north and I am used to snow but not having lemons grow on trees in our garden :-). Apples we do have though. This looks so strange but kind of beautiful too.
I hope the weather is changing for the better soon.

Believe it or not, the same phenomenon hit here a few months ago. What I thought was a snow storm was actually a mixture of hail, rain and I'm not sure what else. The weatherman did not use the term "Graupel", but the results are unmistakable in any language.

Around here there was quite a bit of crop damage to the avocados and citrus, but the millions of dollars in lost revenue was a small price to pay for the great photos I took.

The apple looks delicious, but the lemon looks sour to me.

Very nice 'cooling' still life photo. While it's +37C here this photo is very good to me. :)

Well, here were expeccting 105 to 110 degrees. I'd love to be able to step outside for a few seconds. Your delightful photo is very lovely and very cooling and the explanation is very educational. I like the off center arrangement. Thanks.

As I'm a total bust when it comes to shots featuring snow I can't offer much, but I like your elegant idea.
