I'm rubbish at identifying insects. I don't even know if this a butterfly or a moth. Any ideas? Think the purple plant thing is a thistle...

Excellent detail, and close up of this moth, and that is a thistle it's on. You sure did a good job on this one. tigs=^..^=

I recognize it as a Skipper, so it must be a European variety. I just checked Wiki and looks like European Skipper is correct.

Wonderful capture...love the lighting!

Whatever it may be, this is a grand closeup of the little winged critter. Love the detail and color, MJ. The Blooming artichoke adds a nice contrast.

Its a wonderful close up of the moth with fine detail. The light behind is especially nice too.
I thought at first the flower was a thistle but on closer look I believe Doug is correct - an artichoke flower :)

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . "The question is not what you look at, but what you see" ~ Marcel Proust

A thistle or a artichoke?
Confused now!
How big are artichokes? I thought they were quite big and that would make the butterfly massive and probably negate the need for a macro lens! :)
Additionally, to further complicate/simplify matters, artichokes are a variety of thistle. So we're all correct...
