Taken by the Café A Brasileira in Lisbon, Portugal, heading down to the underground tube station. I knew the picture had potential but was stuck with what to do with it. I had so many options regarding how many people to include or not. I decided to try and time it so the steps were as empty as possible, with a hint of the busy world above and around this person. Not a professional finish, but a fair effort. I didn’t ask before taking the image, but gave a generous donation to him afterwards.

Richard - This is a powerful, emotive photo. The selective coloring of the forlorn looking person sitting on the bottom step in the lower corner of the scene, with b/w elsewhere, as other people go about their business, makes one feel for the person, wondering what must have happened to bring such a painful posture and expression. A terrific photo! Thad

Sometimes I feel that way too. You have captured the sad and lonely feeling very well! Gave you a high grade in VB. Great work!

A wonderful image, Richard. You've done a superb job of capturing the feeling of isolation and loneliness in your composition. The color adds a bit of warmth and compassion to your subject. Nice work!

Wow, this really impressed me. Love the idea and the originality and the capture and way you manipulated it (blur b&w vs colorful sharpness). Just great.

Thanks for sharing,
Paul.

Beauty is no quality in things themselves. It exists merely in the mind which contemplates them, and each mind perceives a different beauty.

A magnificent example of magic realism. Check out some George Tooker paintings and you'll see what I mean.
