I'm sure you'll get better - looks like a reasonable first stab, anyway. I'm assuming you're using nmsmith's tutorial?
You didn't ask for feedback, but you can always ignore it. The shine on this is the first thing I notice. I don't know if it was part of the effect you wanted, but it rather abruptly disappears as if it cannot go beyond a certain line. Also, it doesn't fade out at all and seems rather too opaque. Second, it's hard to be sure, but you seem to be missing some of the layers that help to make the jewel appear spherical - the transparent/black layers that get layered over the base. The base looks pretty good, though. If you've got the base, the other layers should be fairly straightforward to add, right? Just don't ask me about shines - I can't seem to get the hang of the things! Actually, same goes for most things, so best not to ask me about anything, really - my name, your name, my cat's name...
love the background and I know you are on your way..crf always has good tips and if you used Mr. Smith's tutorial I know you will achieve your goal. Photoshop is a powerful tool that needs to be spit shined and polished every day so that each tool and effect is familiar. Then you can go on and create from there. ....but I wax on :) good job...keep it up.

Nice 1st attempt i think tho the shine on the top should be going from "white To Transparent" gradient so it fades into the jewel. You will get much better at photoshop;) Nice job :D
