Thanks to NASA's Earth Observatory for permission to use this image. I don't know about you, but to my eyes this looks as if the canyon actually sticks up above the land surface rather than sinking down into it, a trick of the photographic angle no doubt. The Rincon is a curve of the river now no longer used by the river, it looks in this shot like a donut with a hole in it but that hole is actually a mesa several hundred feet high.

Spent a week on Lake Powell in a houseboat several years ago, what a great place! Thanks for sharing another perspective of it. Although I must admit, this photo makes the place look much simpler than the reality of being there to witness just how big and how rugged it really is.
