Pandora (meaning "gifted") was the first woman according to Greek mythology. She was given a jar by the deities containing all of the miseries of mankind. This jar contained greed, vanity, slander, envy, pining, and hope. Pandora was told not to open the jar, but she was not able to stand her curiosity any longer and opened the jar releasing vanity, slander, greed, pining, and envy, only leaving hope on the inside.

This is absolutely beautiful. Gorgeous colours, lovely design.

It reminds me of a shallow, closely woven box - or maybe a box covered in embroidery silks. But is could also be the lid to a similar, deeper box - with a handle on top (rather than something in the basket) and this is probably a better interpretaion - I think you're right.

Such an attractive lid to cover such nasty surprises. It only seems suited to hope! Maybe that's why hope stayed behind?!

You will be led to the knowledge of the internal things which are invisible to you, by the external things which you see before you. . . . Even so then, we can represent to ourselves in thought the Author of all that is, by contemplating and admiring the (visible) things which He has made, and ever brings into being. - Hermes
