Yes, it really is an artichoke and it is about the size of a big sunflower. My wife walked in with this odd flower. At first I thought "boring", but then a miracle enveloped. I used a tripod to steady my camera. I shot this image with a minimum diafragma of 36 and a shutter release time of 1.5 second. The sun is behind the flower so that the petals light up nicely. If your color is blue, than this is for you!

Nearly perfect composition here. My opinion anyway. As you well stated, the light is working perfectly giving this beauty full attention. I also like your chosen amount of coverage for the "crown" of leaves. My only suggestion would be to clone the larger brown spot out of the one upper left leaf. I find that that is where my attention is drawn away from where it should be. Entire focus is spot on. Nicely presented Paul.
