Monte Rosa is a mountain massif located in the Italian regions Piedmont and Aosta Valley and in the canton of Valais (Wallis) of Switzerland. It is in the Pennine Alps, the same mountain range as the Matterhorn. The Dufourspitze is the highest peak of the Monte Rosa massif and at 4,634m is also the highest peak in Switzerland. Its name is said to derive not from the Italian "rosa" ("pink") colour, as many think, but from a Patois term meaning "glacier", variously spelled as rouese, rouja or roisa.

What a beautiful sight, and the narrative was for most parts new to me.

Great timing on this post, Paul. Looks good and cold, just the spot to enjoy a few beers ;-)

In all seriousness, this is quite a magnificent place indeed. Was this the original shot, or was this cropped a bit?

Please, even if you don't visit my gallery, check out my "Faves".I've left them intact since day "1", and would like it if every image there got the attention they deserved.

No, it is the original. I size it down only because in PNG format the file size will pass 10MB if I upload it bigger (and there IS a limit to what the server will handle). But you can also get it at 3888 pixels wide.
I can show you more of the mountain and glacier if you like this.

Stunning Paul! I am so glad you can go to these places and bring them to those of us who will probably never see them personally. I am putting this beauty in my faves! Incredible work!

Fantastic scene, Paul. Before reading the narrative, I thought some parts of the snow looked rosey. They still do even though that is not what the name means. It looks like heaven and earth come together at this place.

Hello Paul, of course this is magnificent. I wish there were some way for me to be able to tell its size, in other words, a human nearby, or a tree, or a bird. The snow, the rock and the clouds are just awesome. I always love seeing clouds 'peek over' mountains, trees or the wheatlands, (where I live). You must have had a most wonderful holiday. Please post more, how about the people? the colours of clothing and nature? will love anything you share with us. Thank you so much. Verena

Stunning photo and interesting narrative which confirm what I heard in the past from a person living in Aosta who explained me the reason of this particular name.
However your story is quite more completed and detailed.
Hope to view some more pictures of this matter.

Ed.
