Well... your camera did obviously focus on the green leafs underneath but it's a nice shot though. This is something that also troubles me sometimes ... the auto focus has it's own will and does not always share my opinion on what is worth focusing on ;-))
You have an intruiging shot here, Adam. Your macro mode seems to be working quite well, but I do notice that the areas most in focus tend to be the external fringes of the flower petals. Seeing as autofocus systems have yet to become telepathic, refocusing after readjusting the angle or position can give better results (in this case, bringing the interior flower parts - yeah, I forgot them already and biology was only last year - into focus). Also, you can observe by looking at the photo that the white flowers look much more photogenic than the yellow one. The reason for this is that there is a greater contrast between them and the backdrop (in this case, a brown flower pot) than there is between the main subject and the backdrop. This subconsciously states some of "rule of photography" that could be summed up as "make the subject look different than the not". This could be done in postprocessing by cutting out the yellow flower and making the rest of the image b&w or in "photography mode" by thinking of this next time you are out shooting.
Keep on toying with your camera and post a few good textures for me. :-)
