This is the symbol of Venice. It is one of column marking the entrance of Venice. In the ancient time when we only could come in by the sea it was the official entrance. The other column represents the archangel Gabriel, the protector of the city.

In the Gospel of Luke, Gabriel spoke of the future births of both John the Baptist and Jesus and he was the messenger of God. Pretty solid protector for Venice!

The Winged Lion became the symbol of Venice and winged lions were transplanted all over the empire. Quite a story about them and St. Mark.

It's a good picture with an interesting history, but maybe you could crop the top bird out since it is blurry - maybe the bottom bird too - unless you wanted them there. :D

While this is a good capture I would have cropped it alot closer on top and bottom.
