I firstintroduced you to Chief, now meet Pule (pronounced Poo-Lay). Pule is a master carver who makes AMAZING bowls from the branches of Monkeypod trees. First he carves them into shape, then he buries them in the black sand found at the Menehune Pond (for 2-3 weeks they stay buried). The black sand colors the bark dark brown to black. If he wants a red or brown highlight, he then buries the bowl in the red clay soil. Finally when the colors areright, he carves them with traditional tools using only traditional Samoan and Hawaiian symbols. Pule is also an accomplished percussionist. In the forefront, Chief is doing a traditional fire dance, while Pule (in the background) rapidly drums away. This one I dedicate to Terri and Curt. Their quick wit and humor keeps us all on our toes, and is the "fire" that keeps Caedes forums fun.

How you're doin' chief? Nice to see him again.Very nice. Strong colours.
I can almost hear the beats. An emotional pic.
With his dancing the chief brings in so much energy and passion to light up a big campfire. Hmm, do I sound like a pansy?

Chief is a very amusing man. While doing the fire dance, he put the fire between his legs (much like is shown here) and made a funny OUCH MY NUTS ARE ON FIRE face. They weren't and he is very talented in his dancing, but the humor of it had us all laughing hard. Meanwhile, Pule's drumming was infectious. In this image he is using a drum, however he also used wooden mallets and a tree stump as a drum. If you look closely in the background of this pic, you'll see a white dock. That is the pier that Ricardo Montalban greeted his Fantasy Island guests on...

Chief and Pule were great, and even asked me to sit in as an honored guest while they had a Kava ceremony. Also, if you are at all interested in Chief's tattooes, PM me. There is quite a story that goes with them, the belly button tatt in particular signifies him as a Chief.

I'm glad you are enjoying my series.

To humor the party pooper who complained, I will censor my quote======= THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:: Never hold your farts in. They travel up your spine, into your brain, and THAT is where poopy-ish ideas come from!!

Another beauty in your collection Jenn. I can visualize the drumming and dancing and it's easy to put oneself there. Another of the authentic beauty of Hawaii and I'm so delighted that you're sharing these moments with us.
