While home in the islands (this time Maui) to meet my new nephew (congrats baby bro!), I did a touristy thing and went ATV'ing on Haleakala (a dormant volcano, elevation 10k +). Here we had stopped for some juice and to "talk story", at roughly 4500 feet elevation. The ocean view is of an area just past Kaanapali. It may be a bit grainy as it was taken using the 1.3 megapixel camera on my cellphone (trying to gain your sympathy vote here :D). Enjoy, and feel free to ask any questions. PS- this area of Haleakala that I went ATV'ing, is the second largest private working ranch in America (the first is on the Big Island), along the road to here are gorgeous homes, all with these sort of heavenly views, and is known by locals, as Upcountry.

Thanks, I'll try to upload another Maui shot later. Upcountry is most certainly Heaven, or about as close as one can get without actually meeting your maker. It is much cooler here, and has an interesting mix of tropical forests with woods you'd find on the Mainland, with gorgeous tropical flowers thrown in for color. Haleakala itself is the home of a working ranch, observatories, and a National Park. If you go all the way up (10k+ feet elevation) there is a trype of sunflower found ONLY at Haleakala, and NO OTHER PLACE IN THE WORLD!! Getting to the summit, however, requires stops every 2k feet elevation for your body to get used to the altitude...but once up there, you can see an amazing sunrise then bicycle all the way down to the bottom (which I did NOT do, as bikes and I don't get along well).
