Hey Pierre, Merry Krimpas!!!
This boat-lift is in Falkirk in Scotland. It's mainly used for canal barges I think. From what I know of it, it is the only one of its' kind. The section on the left revolves, with a barge in the top and one in the bottom. Mechanically it is a marvel!
Ok, I had no clue...I really like this image. I use Megaman Icons for my desktop...and I can put them all over the place here, and they look like they are hangin out...it's really quite cool.
Its like a balance beam in a way, the weight of the boat in the air balances the weight of the boat (or water) in the bottom chamber, and then the two rotate around the common axis with minimal help from some electric turbines. Truly is a marvel of technology!
Haha Bass, glad your wee men can hang somewhere :op
Thanks Mythica :o)
Well said MOC, it does just that. What's equally amazing is that the two chambers that carry each boat and water don't spill a drop!!
Thanks for comments on pic also :o)
I certainly would have to argue with your claim that this is not the best shot. It is exceptionally well composed and the colours are superb. The engineering is a feat in itself, the aesthetics equally compelling and you have captured both in this shot.
Thanks.
A great shot of a great structure! You caught it glistening against a clear blue sky.
The darker ground and water avoids distracting the eye from the shining center of
interest. The cluster of boats adds cohesion too by countering linear thrust to the
outside of the picture, to a comfortable degree at least. An excellent capture.
Love this, I went there this last weekend and was awestruck. Sadly it was dull and grey, blowing a gale and throwing it dow with rain. I wasnt able to get as nice a shot as this and your others.
In Belgium, we've a classic boat-lift for 1300 T boats and 74 m high
