Well, the B & W ... combined with your subject matter does indeed convey an emotion. A state, if you will.
Being frank here, 'dessicated' came to mind as a descriptor.
Certainly focusses your viewer's eyes right onto the 'puffs'. With a bonus of some nice DOF. Liking that aspect.
And the power of suggestion is at work with my next words, since your accompanying words in your narrative lead me to suggest, inquire, request ... a look see at the colour version?

Somehow this seems menacing to me. The blacks are so dark, and the b/w effect really brings out the chaotic texture of the puffs. I'm intrigued as well about what the color version looks like. My hunch is that b/w gives it an entirely new feel. Creative work!
