An F-14D Tomcat from VF-31 Tomcatters waits its turn to launch off on its final voyage home, and in the process makes a very convenient armrest for a waiting technician. A close study of the condition of the airframe gives light to the reason they were retired!

This is a great shot, and changes perspective totally when viewed at full screen. So much more detail, the names of the pilots are clearly visible, and it's quite clear this Tomcat needs a paint job!!! Like the title too, great picture.

I am envious that you can get these images. I love the title of the photograph, very clever.

The "condition" is and was normal. I never saw an F-14 without a drip pan under it. Even the avionics were silicon sealed to keep out the JP-5. The dirty area is the walkway and is non-skid coated to keep the inattentive from slipping. The blotchy paint would be from spot painting to get rid of ever-present corrosion in a salt spray environment. I spent many an hour working on the avionics in the VAST shop aboard the Enterprise 84-87. Spent a fair share of time on the line division for the A-7's of VA-22 Fighting Redcocks. Wish I had a good camera back then! Great shot that brings back memories
