This image was taken at the Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo, Japan. Picture this...4:30 a.m. and the action is just getting started. Hundreds of fish wholesalers and chefs, all checking out the catch of thousands of flash frozen, huge tuna, getting ready to bid (assessing the quality of the meat by looking at the tail end and the small flap cut into the tail). Tsukiji is the world's largest fish market, and the tuna auction takes place from 4 a.m. to about 6:30 a.m. daily. There were about six gymnasium sized rooms filled with the huge fish, and once the auctions started, the whole place was bustling with action. After 15 minutes or so, the auction for one room was complete, and before we knew it, the fish were all cleared out. We were told that one "average" 200 kg (440 pound) fish fetched 1,000,000 yen (about USD$10000; multiply that by 1000 fish!). Late visitors would never have known what had happened earlier in the morning.
