these glass balls are found (rarely) on beaches surrounding the pacific current. they were used to support fishing nets. they came in many colors and some actually are stamped with the logo of their maker. at one time they were very common. they have become very valuable.

I have never seen one of these before either. They look like they could be collectables. The sand looks so soft and golden compared to the beaches around here.

Wow...This is very interesting & I liked how you gave the history of these rare glass balls. The detail of the sand granules & the sunlight on the glass ball is fantastic.
Great work.

Hi there my friend! I have about 4 of these wonderful glass floats...! One is very very large and all of them are in this same green except one and its cobalt bloo!! They are becoming more and more rare, because the fishermen now use plastic floats...but if you come out to the beach after a storm...first thing the morning after, you might find one washed up to the shore. I love that you took this photo..is this one laying on some nice beach? or is it in the sands of Arizona?..smile....nice shot!!

What a wonderful history lesson you have given me Jen......I have never heard of these before. There just are not many oceans in the Midwest :)...i love the duality of the sand and the water. That ball is a great shade of green..it almost looks gradient. Beautiful capture my friend. Thank you :~)

It is gorgeous. And the even tones of the beach and the waves in both the water and sand make a beautiful setting for this still life

I used to have a few of these - when stationed in Iceland we came across a few - and we would display them in our rooms - mine traveled with me all over the place - but when I got back to the states they were missing in my pack-out. Go figure. I was bummed.

This photo brought back some fun memories - thanks for sharing.
