just some bit of wood I've got hanging in the hall, dont know where I acquired it, probably some building site it looks like they were mixing cement on it! Playing with closeup photography, flash bounce from ceiling to try cast long shadows to deepen the texture and a bit of sharpening at RAW stage taken at about 30cm.

Well you certainly have the technical aspects of this stuff down pretty well. The image is difficult to break down though. The eye has nothing on which to focus. Perhaps if you included the entire piece of wood it might be more meaningful?

Hi Jeremi,
I agree with Regmar that the eye has nothing to focus on if you watch the image at full size.
As a thumbnail this image is much easier to "understand". Nevertheless, this picture is very interesting and I find lots of different aspects in it. Given your description I believe that it's a piece of wood evevn though it looks more like concrete. I have my own point of view and interpretation of this image and for me it has something special..., I really like it.

I saw the face on the thumbnail Jeremi! Guess we are in the lock down togetherm huh? hehe....very interesting colors on this wood. I actually thought it was a wood carved face in the thumbnail. When viewed full screen, for me, the face is highly visible and quite unique. I have just downloaded this to my hardrive where it will reside with my other favorites! Good technical description through & through. You could dazzle me with it :)).....thank you my friend!

I saw it in the thumnail as well. It's sort of a Picasso style face. Well worth picking up this found object as an interresting abstract
