This large Sitka Spruce dwarfs its surroundings. A count of the rings equals 590 which was written on the end of the log. Shot taken on the Carmanah Trail, Vancouver Island, BC.
Geeeez.....that is old! Thankfully there is something older than me still around!!! :~) Cool capture Darryl...the thumbnail does not do it justice...love the old moss on it! Into my fav's on my HD & thank you for another "National Geographic" moment!! :))
That was nice of someone else to count for us. ;) Everything has been said here Darryl. It's a fav. and the composition is perfect for my desktop. I do have to give kudos too to the folks who made that charming path through there. Neat idea.
Thank you BJ. Glad it works for your desktop. It is a very nice boardwalk...I wonder where they found all the wood lol. I believe most of the paths are built by the minimum security personell.
That is just amazing, how long ago did they put in the path? I'd have to say it was definitely smarter to cut through it than try to remove it!! 10/favs
There is a pleasure in the pathless woods,
There is a rapture on the lonely shore,
There is a society, where none intrudes,
By the deep Sea, and music in its roar,
I love not man less, but Nature more
--Lord Byron
Thank you Joost and Jill. I would be guessing the path has been there about 5 years. On some parts of the path you find yourself walking along the top of the log. There have been stairs carved into the ends:-)
It’s pretty amazing when you think about how old it really is! I remember seeing a similar tree piece at the B.C. pavilion at Expo 86. They had little signs screwed to it that showed when different historical events happened and their corresponding rings.
