A reasonably nice sunset taken at home with my crappy new camera purchased to replace the much maligned Olympus Mju Tough. Canon Powershot E1. Don't believe the glowing reviews. Worst. Camera. Ever. Avoid.

Why do the pictures come out square when the lens is round??

Trust me R - it was the only salvageable shot out of maybe 100 taken, so draw your own conclusions :-)

I also put it through the ringer with Nik's Pro Sharpening software to try and get something meaningful in the detail.

On the cannon, I find it hard to believe your having problems with it. I have a Power shot A75 and I just love it. It does have limitations for scenic photos mainly long distance shots.

Now on to whats at hand, this photo is a good photo but I dont care for how small it is but that's just my preference.

As for the Canon, as you say, shooting anything other than close range snaps is way out of its depth – even if you change the aperture – the detailing is negligible and smudgy. Light metering is a joke as is the auto white balance. I spent a lot of time trying the various metering options but all of them are compromised in one way or another leaving you with either fully blown out highlights or bunged in shadows. The same could be said of the focusing which even with its ‘intelligent assist’ mode; struggles to lock onto anything quickly in anything but perfect lighting conditions. Face detection works to a fashion but if only you were planning on detecting the person at the back of the room instead of the one stood in front of you. I realize that using a compact you can’t expect anything like an SLR level of quality but really this model is a joke – pretty much only good for party snapshots. Should have bitten the bullet and spent more to get a decent Ixus model instead.
