Dwarapalaka means "One who guards the entrance". This is in the left side of the door to the main entrance of the Aghoreshwara Temple, Ikkeri

Ah, I was HOPING you'd post a close-up of one of these doorway carvings. So this sanguine fellow is guarding the entrance. I see his hand signal to stop. But his pose and lack of weapons looks very casual, even graceful. Thanks!

Sharon, the hand signal is not to stop. This gesture is called "Abhaya Hastam" in sanskrit. It means I'm protecting you, do not fear. This symbolism is found on most of statues in Hindu temples. I agree with you, his post is very casual and graceful.
