Part of the character of South Louisiana is formed by the proliferation of these ancient gentle monsters which cover the land as you drive from fading town to fading town. When I was a boy we would travel the backroads before the interstate rendered these trees invisible, and as we drove we saw many manicured landscapes preserved as settings for these gnarled witnesses to our culture, but now as I age along with those who share our languorous way of life those coiffed lawns seem to occur less frequently, and the oaks disappear into the forest that has grown around them. This spot however remains as it was because some dedicated soul still cares, and we who share his love may still enjoy it with him if only for a moment in time.

This majestic Oak is an example to me of how strong one can be if your roots are planted firmly and are able to prevail what ever misfortunes may come. Sometimes nature is the greatest teacher of all. Thank you Regmar for another thought provoking post. I always enjoy seeing what you will do next. Eileen

Be not forgetful to entertain strangers; for thereby some have entertained angels unawares

Art is the perception of the creator. Meaning is the perception of the viewer. acceptance is the perception of society.

Fine work here Regmar! Your choice of B&W reinforces the strength and age of this wonderful native tree. I so enjoyed your narrative as well. Well done!

Seems like every "imaginary friend" I've ever had, sooner or later I've had to kill them?

I really like this shot! It really says so much! If only it could talk and tell us what all it has seen in all of its years. Thanks for taking the picture!

Oh how I remember these Oaks...and they were usually draped with the Spanish Moss that I so loved and that shows the real feeling of the Deep South. I also remember the one time while living in Shreveport, we had a tornado come thru, and one whole block had Oaks lining each side and every single one of them was ripped out of the ground. Never forgot that one, and will always be thankful we made it thru that storm. I'm so glad you did a photo of this royal Oak...I enjoy seeing all the various things from the South so very much. Thank you my friend, so very much..........verena

Each day I must take one more step, no matter how small or how large, but I must take the step.

The majesty of that stately oak tree is amazing. I wonder what the girth of it is? I still can't decide what I like most Reg....the image or your delicious description of how it used to be. My kids roll their eyes when I go down that road of "when I was a kid", yet I know the day will come when their kids will roll their eyes as my kids say "when I was a kid, I remember....". Isn't it interesting how the circle of life keeps repeating itself? I assume that is why it is called "the circle". Well done on this Reg. Hope that you and Lourdes are both well. Thank you for the thought provoking history lesson and trip down memory lane :~)
