This plant is a pretty tough customer, except for these jolly little flowers it produces. It's a small, upright desert bush that's about 90% thorns, with just a touch of greenery. All of it is covered in a thin layer of sticky, resinous sap. From that tangle it produces these one & a half inch wide blossoms. Kind of a Jekyll & Hyde plant. The lens was, as usual, the Canon 100mm IS macro, with a Canon MR-14EX ring flash for fill light.

Thanks Joy. I'm very pleased you liked it.

I must have shot these flowers on ten different walks. Many of them were very pretty, but weak compositionally. Now I tell myself to 'slow down' and try more angle/exposure combinations. I think that mantra paid off here. Shot from a crouch looking upward at the sky, it avoids the dark background you get when shooting downward and the strobe becomes the dominant light source.
