A young, four inch mantis on one of my pepper plants. I've been watching this insect for over a week as it moves around the yard, and the right forelimb was fine a few days ago. I can't imagine what's in my backyard that could do that kind of damage, except maybe another mantis that I haven't seen yet. Taken with a Canon 6D, 100mm macro lens and ring flash.

Welcome back Russ, and what superb image of a hard to spot insect, and for me one of my favorites. I need to try the ring flash, not done so yet, but this sure motivates me to try it. tigs=^..^=

These are great for the garden...maybe a bird tried to make off with it. Anyway, this is a wonderful close-up

Outstanding , the color and clarity are just great. I believe they are beneficial in the garden and take care of the real pests.

Thank you all for the nice comments. They're very indiscriminate feeders. I watched this one take down an assassin bug that wandered too close, and then a few minutes later, almost snag a wasp in flight. The limb looks chewed off, where a bird would've just flown away with the whole insect. I'm thinking a similar, larger predator is waiting to be discovered. I'll show it if I find it.
