Another common garden pest, this one was introduced to California in the late 1800's. This particular beetle was on one of my mandarin plants, and is about half an inch long. Shot handheld at night, at 3X with the Canon MP-E65 macro lens and a ring flash.

Kind of a burly looking little fellow, isn't he? Surprisingly large eyes, too.

I do hope you had a talk with him about not destroying your mandarin plants.

The detail in your photograph is incredible! I am obsessed with what looks like free floating scales on the weevil in your image. Very cool!

I am so impressed, as always, with your remarkable photographic talent.

Thank you both for the nice comments. Even a blah looking beetle can show interesting detail at high magnification. These have an almost upholstered look to their shells.

He has a rather gothic type of beauty - well done on capturing this evil weevil who is not doing your mandarins any good !

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . "The question is not what you look at, but what you see" ~ Marcel Proust
