Another bee shot from the archives. Taken at about 3X with the Canon MP-E65 macro lens and a ring flash. The cluster of three simple eyes partially seen on top of the head are ocelli. They focus through a single lens, unlike the large compound eyes, and are used for sun orientation and navigation. Also interesting are the fine guard hairs that cover the compound eyes, that disappear when seen straight on.

Your macros are superb, as is this one. Thanks for the informative narrative as well. I have said it before but it bears repeating I need to get out the tripod, and ring flash, and give this type of photography a try, I know it takes practice. I think your past the beginner stage, kudos! tigs=^..^=

The reason why the sun sets in the evening is because it wants to see the sunrise in the morning. I rise in the morning because I want to see them both. RvdB

Thank you both for the very nice comments. And Tigs, if you don't practice, you don't get the shots. The failure rate is a lot higher in macro too, where depth of field is so much shallower. A 10 percent keeper rate should make any macro- photographer happy, and I don't really consider this shot much of a keeper either, it's really dark and drab. It's the only one I have from this angle and distance though. So ta-daa.

Good grief ! - that is amazing - to see the bee this close is unexpected.
Thank you also for the informative narrative.

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . "The question is not what you look at, but what you see" ~ Marcel Proust
